DEFENCE
A defense service is one of the finest of all professions. Indeed it is also one of the most danger-ladden careers as one has to face the challenges at the risk of his life. A defense personal has to be on the duty all the time for the country. The Indian armed forces have a reputation of being among the best and largest in the world. The services environment in Indian armed forces offers a very healthy work culture to the individuals. It offers challenging and result oriented environment and is best suited for honest and upright person to serve and as such holds the promise of bringing high social standing and honour to an individual joining the team. Life in Armed Forces is regimented and it takes priority over normal life.
Eligibility:
(i) For Army Wing of the National Defense Academy: 10+2 on the pattern of senior secondary education or equivalent examination conducted by a State Education Board or University.
(ii) For Air Force and Naval Wings of National Defense Academy and for the 10+2 (Executive Branch) Course at the Naval Academy: 10+2 on the pattern of senior secondary education or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics conducted by a State Education Board or University.
National Defense academy/Naval Academy Examination is held by the union public services commission every year in the months of April and September for admission to the Army, Navy and Air Force Wings of the National Defense Academy for the 10+2 (Executive Branch).
Admission to the above courses is made on the basis of the results of the written examination conducted by the UPSC followed by intelligence and personality test by the services selection board which is only for those candidates who have qualified in the written examination.
To get selected, candidates for the Army/Navy and Naval Academy should secure the minimum qualifying marks separately in (i) Written Examination, (ii) Officers Potentiality test, as fixed by the Commission in their discretion. The candidates for the Air Force should secure the minimum qualifying marks separately in (i) Written Examination, (ii) Pilot Aptitude Test, as fixed by the commission in their discretion.
Subject to these conditions, the qualified candidates are then placed in the final order of the merit on the basis of the total marks secured by them in the written examination and the Services Selection Board Tests in three separate lists, one for the Army and the Navy, the second for the Air Force, and the third for the course at the Naval Academy.
Training:
The selected candidates for the three services namely Army, Navy and Air Force are given preliminary training on both academic and physical for a period of three years at the National Defense Academy which is an inter-service institution. The training during the first two and a half years is common to the cadets of three wings. The cadets on passing out are awarded B.Sc./B.A. degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi.
