Hospitality can be termed as service given to people. It consists of broad category of fields within the service industry that includes lodging, restaurants, event planning, theme parks, transportation, cruise line, and additional fields within the tourism industry.

The hospitality industry is a several billion dollar industry that mostly depends on the availability of leisure time and disposable income. A hospitality unit such as a restaurant, hotel, or even an amusement park consists of multiple groups such as facility maintenance, direct operations (servers, housekeepers, porters, kitchen workers, bartenders, etc.), management, marketing, and human resources. However, candidates opting for the career in hospitality sector have to go through a rigorous training program to be able to sustain the ever growing demand of this industry. Many colleges and universities across the country offer courses in the hospitality sector.

The career scope after the completion of these courses is very wide and promising. Hotel industry involves combination of various skills like management, food and beverage service, housekeeping, front office operation, sales and marketing, accounting.

 Eligibility:

Candidates seeking admission to the hotel management courses in India need to pass their 12th standard examination with English as a subject. Students with a bachelor’s degree from any recognized university may also join some of the management training schemes offered by various institutions. Admission depends on the performance of the students in the written admission test, personal interview round and group discussion session. The national council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology conducts a joint Entrance test for admission to the three year diploma programme in hotel management for institutes affiliated to the council. To appear in the examination candidate should not be more than 22 years of age as on July 1 of that year. Maximum age is relaxable up to 25 years for scheduled caste/scheduled tribe candidates. Fifteen percent seats are reserved for SC and 7.5% for ST candidates.

 Duration:

The time duration of the courses offered by several institutes may vary from six months to three years.

 Job Opportunities:

Depending on the qualification one can find jobs in hospitality sector as Management Trainee, customer relations executive, Marketing/Sales Executive, Kitchen Management/House Keeping Management, Chefs in hotels. One can also find jobs in cabin crew in National and international Airlines, as executives in tourism development corporations. A course in hotel management provides opportunities for work not only in the hotel industry but also in the railways, airlines, hospitals, industry canteens, defense services.

“There is a good demand for trained and experienced hotel professionals all over the world, particularly in the developing countries of Asia, Middle East and Africa. A good number of trained hotel personnel have migrated to West Asian countries, Australia, Canada, Germany and New Zealand. 

Skills Required:

They should have a good organizational back-ground, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, strong commitment and self-discipline. One must be an extrovert, co-operative, polite and respectful to the guests, have patience to deal guest criticism even when you know you are right.

Remuneration: Salary varies according to the nature of work and qualification.
